Raymond Joseph Henke, 90, of Marcus, died Sunday April 13, 2008 at the Heartland Care Center, Marcus.
Funeral services were held Thursday April 17, 2008 at the Marcus Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Rev. Eugene Murray officiated. Burial was in the Maryhill Visitation Cemetery, rural Cherokee.
Raymond was born on Jan. 4, 1918 in Cherokee county to Frank and Eva (Kohn) Henke., and lived his whole life in Cherokee county. Raymond received his schooling at Maryhill Visitation Catholic School, where he completed the eighth grade and then began working as a farmhand.
Raymond joined the Air Corps in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1943. On Sept. 12, 1944 he married Agnes Johnson at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. They began their life together on a farm in Grand Meadow Township, where they remained until retirement in 1981 to Marcus. Agnes preceded him in death on Feb. 9, 1993.
Raymond entered the Heartland Care Center of Marcus in February of 2007. He was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church and a past member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Quimby, where he was a director for many years. Farming was Raymond's life. He also enjoyed being with family, playing cards, and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Agnes, two sons and one daughter in infancy, a sister Delores Benson, and a nephew David Henke.
Left in his memory are two sons, Douglas (Diane) Henke of Washta; Scott (Sandy) Henke of Bloomington, Minn.; a daughter, Patricia (Dr. Ron) Galles of Marcus, IA; ten grandchildren, Lori (Tim) Dreckman of Marcus; Brenda (Jon) Neumann of Kingsley; Ted (Tracee) Henke of Marcus; Ashley Henke of Washta; Geri Lynn Specht of Marcus; Neal (Holly) Galles of Marcus; Nathan (Kim) Galles of Humboldt; Greg Galles of Marcus; Carissa and Alyssa Henke of Bloomington, Minn.; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Angela Dover of Flint, Mich.; two brothers, Richard (Sally) Henke of Cherokee; Cletus (Phyllis) Henke of Cherokee; a sister-in-law, Mabel (Dean) Koeppen of South Sioux City, Neb.; many nieces and nephews.
