Ruby L. Ryan, 96, of Cherokee passed away Monday, March 17, 2008, at Careage Hills in Cherokee.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with the Rev. Ethan Sayler officiating. Burial will be in Quimby Cemetery, Quimby, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Ruby was born Aug. 28, 1911, in Clarion, Iowa, to Newt and Mary (Lanning) Swain. She graduated in 1928 from Central High School in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She attended Iowa State University every summer for Continuing Education Classes for dietary supervisors.

She was married to Edward P. Ryan on Aug. 5, 1929, in Storm Lake, Iowa. She worked for the Cherokee Community Schools as the food services director for 30 years, retiring in May 1977.

She was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church. She loved playing cards, writing letters and cooking.

She is survived by two sons, Mike J. Ryan and his wife, Tessie of Sioux City and Keith "Pat" Ryan of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two nephews; and a very special friend, Gladys Albers of Cherokee.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975; two sons, Stanley and Jerry Ryan; a granddaughter, Rene Ryan; and two sisters, Eva Braden and Mabel Beddow.
