Jess Akin, 89, of Cherokee, Iowa died Sunday February 3, 2008 in the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota following a lengthy illness.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday February 8, 2008 at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Gregg Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M at the Greenwood Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at www.greenwoodfuneral.com.
In lieu of flowers donations are requested to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
Jess was born on March 25, 1918 in Nodaway County, Missouri to Jesse and Mary (Sargent) Akin. He attended school in Quimby, Iowa. Following his schooling he started working for the Illinois Central Railroad at the age of 15. On May 18, 1937 he married Lola Akin in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She preceded him in death in 1983. Jess started his own farm bulldozer service and retired in 1980. In his retirement he worked part-time for Lundell Construction. He enjoyed playing golf and having coffee with friends.
He is survived by a son, Jay Akin and his wife, Doris, of Plattsburg, Missouri; brothers, Cecil Akin of Cherokee, Iowa; Robert Akin and his wife, Eva, of Raytown, Missouri; Donald Akin and his wife, Juanita, of Waterloo, Iowa; a sister, Dorothy Church of Sioux City, Iowa; a grandson, Jeffery Akin and his wife, Karen, of Muskogee, Oklahoma; great grandchildren, Josh, Mark, and Destiny Akin of Muskogee, Oklahoma; step-grandchildren, George and Susan Bratcher of Kansas City, Missouri; Fred and Pam Burroughs and their daughter, Megan, of Kansas City, Missouri; Randy and Marsha Conley and their children, Jon, Darren, Chad, Samantha, and Jacob of Cartersville, Georgia
He was preceded in death by Jay Akin Jr. (2000), two sisters, Helen and Letha.
