Toni E. (McGowan) Johnikin, 41, of Cherokee passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City following a three-year battle with cancer.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with the Rev. Floyd Brown officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Toni was born Jan. 14, 1966, in Cherokee, the daughter of Dennis and Mary Ann (Wilson) McGowan. She was raised in the Storm Lake area where she attended schools. She graduated from high school in Western Grove, Ark. She attended college where she played women's basketball.

She married Windell Morgan and was later married to Daniel Johnikin on April 21, 2005, in Sioux City.

She was employed at the CUSSO unit and had worked at the YES Detention Center in Cherokee. She lived in Cherokee the past six years. Prior to this, she lived in Quimby, Iowa.

She was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Sioux City.

She enjoyed music, drawing, fishing, attending her son's activities and watching sports, especially college basketball.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel of Cherokee; a son, Jamon McGowan of Cherokee; her mother, Mary McGowan of Everton, Ark.; two stepchildren, James Johnikin of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kelsey Johnikin of Jacksonville, Ala.; and three brothers and two sisters, Tim McGowan and his wife, Karen, of Lignum, Va., Kelly Denkinger and her husband, Stan, of Minneapolis, Minn., Stacy Sappenfield and her husband, David, of Everton, Shane McGowan of Marble Falls, Ark., and Shawn McGowan and his wife, Megan, of Aurelia, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her father; a brother, Tom McGowan; a sister, Susie McGowan; and her paternal and maternal grandparents.
