Staver Hyndman, 85, of Cherokee, Iowa died Monday October 1, 2007, in the Careage Hills Nursing Home, Cherokee, Iowa, following a short illness.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday October 5, 2007, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Armand Bertrand will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., with a scripture service at 7:00 P.M, followed by a rosary with the Knights of Columbus at 7:30 P.M. at Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Staver was born on December 14, 1921 near Marcus, Iowa to Malcolm and Christina (Staver) Hyndman. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1940. In 1942 he entered the Army Air Corps and was a B-17 Pilot flying 35 missions until 1945. Piloting the B-17 he was a member of the U.S. Eighth Air Force-398th Bombardment Group. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal for his raid on Merseberg, Germany where he was forced to crash land near Bruges, Belgium. Staver was awarded the U.S. Air Medal with six clusters, World Ward II Victory and European Theatre operations medals.

After his military service, Staver returned to Cherokee and married Mary Timmins on September 14, 1950. She preceded him in death on February 19, 2002. He worked for Caswell’s for several years and then as a carrier for the United States Post Office, from 1954 until retiring in 1984. He enjoyed playing golf and traveling to Texas. Staver was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include two sons, Patrick Hyndman and his wife, Lynette, of Cherokee, Iowa, Paul Hyndman and his wife, Deb, of Cherokee, Iowa; two daughters, Jane Klein and her husband, Randy, of Wichita Falls, Texas, Jean Hyndman and her special friend, Ken McKinney, also of Wichita Falls, Texas; a sister, Mary Jane Netley of Cherokee, Iowa; grandchildren, Dr. Cherilyn Wicks, and her husband, Dave; Dan Hyndman, Katie Klein, Ryan Klein, and David Hyndman, and his wife, Ginnia; one great grandson, Xzavier Hyndman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary (2002), one grandson Kyle Hyndman (2001), two brothers, Mac and Keith Hyndman, one sister, Shirley Booth.
