ROBERT J. OBBINK

Robert J. Obbink, of Cherokee, Iowa, died Friday, September 21, 2007 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at 3:00 P.M. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Richard Arndt will officiate. Burial will in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the V.F.W. L.A. Wescott Post #2253. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with the family present at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.greenwoodfuneral.com

Bob was born July 5, 1937 in Hawarden, Iowa, to William and Alice (Feikema) Obbink. He graduated from Western Christian High school in Hawarden, Iowa in 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1961. While serving in the Naval Reserves he also worked construction and drove trucks in the Pocahontas and Jefferson, Iowa area. On May 7, 1961 he married Judy Hargens in Jackson, Minnesota. In 1961 he and Judy moved to Cherokee, Iowa where Bob drove truck for Fixsel Oil Company. He later took a job with the street department for the City of Cherokee. Prior to his retirement in 1988 he also worked for the Parks and Recreation Department.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; a daughter, Brenda Medick, and her husband, David, of Cherokee, Iowa; 2 sisters-in-law, Betty Stoneking and Janice Terry, both of Cushing, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Gaylen Galvin, of Holstein, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law (Kenneth Stoneking and Joe Terry) a sister-in-law, (Carol Galvin).
