Alice M. Schmidt, 89, of rural Meriden passed away Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa, with the Rev. Richard Arndt officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery, rural Meriden. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Alice was born Feb. 15, 1918, on the family farm north of Cleghorn, Iowa, to Arthur and Jennie (Long) Puhrmann. She attended school in Cleghorn.

She was married to Melvin E. Schmidt on June 7, 1939, at Cleghorn Christian Church. They lived and farmed north of Meriden until 1978, when they moved into their new home on Melvin's grandparents' Century Farm. She and her husband farmed in Liberty Township for many years.

Alice was well-known for raising and dressing capon chickens for many years and also sold brown eggs. She enjoyed baking and her family always looked forward to receiving her famous angel food cake with delicious seven-minute frosting on their birthdays. She was a very caring and loving mother and grandma. She entered Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa, on June 8, 2005. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee.

She is survived by a son and a daughter, Dean Schmidt and his wife, Donnia of Meriden, and Phyllis Ames of Meriden, and her fiance, Robert Bowen of Ida Grove, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jeff and Kim Ames of Marcus, Todd and Kristi Ames of Marcus, Danae and Bruce Dreckman of Marcus, Deb and Dave Merten of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Darcy and Brad Wurth of Le Mars, Iowa; eight great-grandchildren, Kylee and Shana Ames, Emily and Brandon Dreckman, Austin and Dylan Wurth and Logan and Jenna Merten; a brother, Clifford Puhrmann and his wife, LaVera of Germantown, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on April 5, 2005; a son-in-law, Doyle Ames; and two brothers, Harold and Ray Puhrmann.
