John Leonard was the oldest child of thirteen children born to Hiram and Sarah Leonard. He was born near Rochelle, Ill., Dec. 30, 1842. Here he grew to manhood and Dec. 12, 1871, was married to Clara J. Ryan of Oregon, Ill. To this union three children were born-Mintie E., now Mrs. J. N. Lyman of Iroquois, S. D.; Elmer and Earl F. now living in Hartley, Iowa. The family home was on a farm near Rochelle, Ill;., until 1890, when they moved to Iowa and settled on a farm in Silver township, Cherokee county. After the death of Mrs Leonard in 1904 Mr. Leonard retired from the farm.

On Dec. 30, 1908, he was married to Mrs. Nettie VanPatten of Rochelle, Ill. They resided a year in Holstein and then came to Cherokee in the fall of 1909, where he had since resided.
