Harold L. Johnson, 72, of rural Marcus passed away Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus, with the Rev. Larry Adler officiating. Burial will be in Holy Name Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Harold Lee "Harry" Johnson was born April 9, 1935, on a farm near Marcus, to Oscar and Norma (Riedemann) Johnson. He was raised on the farm and attended Marcus schools. On Feb. 28, 1955, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served overseas in Germany. He proudly served his country as a supply sergeant until earning his honorable discharge on Jan. 7, 1958. Following his service, he returned to Marcus to farm.

On Feb. 7, 1959, he and Kathy Rassel were united in marriage at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. The couple made their home on the farm. He and his family farmed for many years in the Marcus area. He also worked with plumbing and heating at Marcus Lumber for 12 years. He retired in January 1999, but remained on the farm and helped his brother and neighbors.

He was a member of the Hart-Parr Oliver Club and the Marcus Snowbirds Snowmobile Club. He bowled for many years with the Red Jackets Bowling Team in Marcus.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Kathy of rural Marcus; a daughter and her husband, Becky and Roger Letsche of Scurry, Texas; two sons, Alan Johnson and Greg Johnson, both of Le Mars, Iowa; a daughter, Amy Johnson of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Katie, Andrew, Alexa, Matthew and Taylor Johnson and Luke Letsche; two brothers, Donald Johnson of Windom, Minn., and Rog Johnson and his wife, Carol of Remsen, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Eunice Johnson of Cherokee, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Pete Bird of Worthington, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lois Bird; and two brothers, Maynard and Dale Johnson.
