Funeral Services for Rex Whitney, 81 of Aurelia will be at 10:30 today at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia, with Pastor David Renfro officiating. Burial will be in the pleasant Hill Cemetery here.
Rex died Fri. Apr. 24, 1998, at the Sunset Knoll Retirement Home in Aurelia.
Rex William Whitney was born June 8, 1916, the son of Roy S. and Pearl (Coombs) Whitney at Peterson Iowa. He attended Aurelia High School graduating in 1933, later he attended the university of MN and Capital City Commercial College. On Apr. 16, 1941, he married Lelia Honsbruck in Aurelia. Rex worked at the Whitney Grain Elevator, owned and operated Whitney Hardware, then worked for the State Of Iowa Employment services until his retirement.
Rex was active in the community, having served on the Aurelia School Board, Aurelia Library Board, Cherokee County Conservation Board, Board of directors of Peoples Telephone Co, and served on the Board of Directors of the First Trust and Savings Bank for nearly 40 years. He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church and served on several church boards. His great-grandfather was a founding of Aurelia.
Preceding Rex in death were his parents.
Survivors include his wife, 3 children; Douglas Whitney and his wife Nancy Engler of Phoenix Az. June Whitney of St. Paul MN and Dan and his wife Janet Whitney of Aurelia, 6 grandchildren; Rhonda and her husband Joe Fraser, Aaron Whitney, April Oertwig, Shaun Oertwig, Jon and his wife Sandy Whitney and David Whitney, 1 sister Lois and her husband John Christenson of Spirit Lake. 2 aunts; Katherine Whitney of Aurelia and Gerri Whitney of Storm lake.
