Robert Wheatley Ferrin, 85, of Wilmington N.C., died on July 7, 2007 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Annapolis, Md.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Battleship North Carolina, PO Box 480 Wilmington, NC 28402-0480.

Robert was raised in Cherokee and graduated from Wilson High School in 1939. He also was a graduate of the Naval Academy and retired after 20 years as a Commander. After his military service, he went on to work for IBM in procurement and shipping. He enjoyed years of travel. After retiring he settled down in Wilmington to be close to his beloved Battleship North Carolina.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janis; one son, Marshall and his wife Peggy Ferrin and their son Ted of Oak Hill, Va.; one daughter, Martha and her husband Michael D'Ornellas and their children Autumn and Zachary of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Joan Jensen of St. Angelo, Texas and one sister in law, Joyce Christoffersen, who was maid of honor at Robert and Janis' wedding; also his nephew Larry O. Hanson of Cherokee.
