Marie DeWitt, 87, of Cherokee, and formerly of Washta, died Friday, July 13, 2007 in the Cherokee Villa Nursing & Rehab Center following a one year illness.

Funeral services were held July 16th at 10:30 a.m. at the Washta United Methodist Church. Rev. Carolyn Hollar officiated.

Burial was in the Sunset View Cemetery at Washta. Boothby Funeral Home of Cherokee was in charge of arrangements.

Marie was born Feb. 14, 1920 at Lincoln, Neb. to Christian and Catherine (Knaub) Korell. She attended schools in Lincoln.

She was married to Donald L. DeWitt on May 14, 1941 at Buffalo, New York. She and her husband farmed west of Washta, Iowa for 30 years. Following their retirement in 1980, the couple moved to Hermitage, Mo., where they lived until August of 1999 when they moved to Cherokee. She was a member of the Washta United Methodist Church, a member and Past President of the U.M.W., was a former Sunday School teacher, 4-H Leader and Cub Scout Leader. Marie enjoyed crocheting, aerobics, reading, music and flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald on July 18, 2005 and one sister Clara Smalldone.

She is survived by two daughters and two sons: Cathy Swanson and her husband Gerald of Central City, Neb.; Judy Thayer and her husband Don of Brodhead, Wis.; Jim DeWitt and his wife Jane of Washta; Jerry DeWitt and his wife Nini of Simi Valley, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; one sister Ruth Schwartzkopf of Montrose, Colo.
