Marie Sand, 86, of Marcus passed away Monday, June 11, 2007, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, with the Rev. Eugene Murray officiating. Burial will be in Holy Name Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a rosary at 3 p.m., the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m., at Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Marie Laura Sand was born Jan. 30, 1921, in Meriden Township, Cherokee County, Iowa, the daughter of Claude and Laura (Pfiefer) Peck. She attended country school and later graduated from Meriden (Iowa) High School in 1939. Following her education, she worked for the Sand family as a housekeeper. She would move to California during World War II and work there as a housekeeper. She then went to work for Douglas Aircraft as a riveter. She also trained other employees to rivet. Following the war, she returned to Marcus.

On April 23, 1946, she and Lorne Robert Sand were united in marriage at Holy Name Catholic Church. The couple made their home in Marcus, where she was a homemaker.

She was a hard worker and her life centered on her family and church. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and St. Ann's Guild. She also was an avid bowler.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Bev (Jim) Nielsen of Marcus, Alan (Connie) Sand of Cleghorn, Iowa, Monica (Tom) Mayer of Marcus and Dean (Mary) Sand of Sioux Falls, S.D.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Wade (Nancy) Nielsen and Tyler, Amanda, Thomas and Nicholas Nielsen, Chad (Rachel) Nielsen and Gabrielle Nielsen, Jason (special friend, Gayle Mitchell) Nielsen, Chad (Alina) McIntyre and Derek McIntyre, Shane (Myra) Sand and Tyler, Alexis, Victoria, Nicholas and Angel Sand, Jennifer (special friend, Chris) Malec and Van Malec, Kathryn Malec and Alexis Malec, Jessica Sand and Allee Sand, Nicole Sand and Gracie Sand, Mike (Michelle) Mayer and Trever, Tayler and Tanner Coombs, Ann (Jeff) Goth and Kaitlyn, Kristina and Derek Goth, Stephanie Mayer and Lydia Sand; brothers and sisters, Walter Peck of Napa, Idaho, Lester (Mary) Peck of Napa, Idaho, Dorothy Mooreman of Los Angeles, Calif., Marjorie Lundquist of Meriden, Iowa, Vera Buckendahl of Alta, Iowa, and Joyce(Duane) Anderson of Alta, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lorne on April 6, 2000; a sister and her husband, Betty and Bruce Cranston; brothers-in-law, Edwin Buckendahl, Morris Mooreman and Williard Lundquist; and a sister-in-law, Penny Peck.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
