Lawrence E. Hohbach, 87, of rural Marcus passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus, with Pastor Liz Pfeifle officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars L.A. Wescott Post 2253 of Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Lawrence was born April 11, 1920, in Tilden Township, Cherokee County, Iowa, to Adam and Clara (Briggs) Hohbach. He attended District 8 rural school in Tilden Township.

He was married to Bernice Ahlgren on Nov. 30, 1941, at South Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific and European Theaters from June 30, 1942, and was discharged Feb. 16, 1946. After being discharged, he returned to farming on the family farm, retiring in 1990. Lawrence was one of the farmers who was on the cutting edge of contour farming. He entered Heartland Care Center in November 2003.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus, having served on the church council many times. He was a lifetime member of VFW L.A. Wescott Post 2253 in Cherokee and the American Legion F.I. Goodburn Post 517 in Marcus. He enjoyed reading, fishing, tinkering in his shop at the farm and time spent with his family.

Survivors include three children, Marcia Boyle of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Dennis Hohbach and his wife, Shar of Sioux City, and Judy Means and her husband, Duane of Marcus; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Hohbach of rural Marcus, currently residing in Wayne, Neb., and Georgia Ahlgren of Del Mar, Calif.; three nephews; and a niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernice, on May 23, 2002; two brothers, Wilmer and Lloyd Hohbach; a son-in-law, Daniel Boyle; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Ahlgren; and a nephew, Douglas Hohbach.
