Mrs. C. B. Holden, Pioneer of City, Taken by Death
---
Dies Suddenly After Apparently Near Recovery
----
Cherokee County News

Mrs. C. B. Holden, 83, one of Cherokee's early citizens, died at her home, 350 E. Cedar street, at 4 o'clock Tuesday morning. Her sudden death resulted from heart disease.

Taken ill two weeks ago with pleurisy, Mrs. Holden had recovered almost completely and the day before her death seemed well and cheerful as her friends always knew her. A sudden heart attack at 2 a.m. caused her death two hours later at her home.

Husband Former Mayor

Wife of C. B. Holden, former mayor of Cherokee and originator of the Holden Monument company, Mrs. Holden had lived more than 50 years in Cherokee. Had she lived five days longer, she would have been 84 years of age.

Preceding her in death were her husband and their only daughter, Maude, who died a few years ago. Surviving are two sons, Arthur of Oak Park, Ill., and Chester of Cherokee.

Her son Chester succeeded his father in ownership of the monument company, a position he held for many years. Arthur was called when his mother was ill two weeks ago and spent several days here, confident when he left that his mother was well on the road to recovery.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock from the home, with the Rev. R. C. Mitchell in charge. Appleyard and Boothby are in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

NOTE: Mrs. Caryl Boynton (Annette/Nettie) Holden was born 3 Feb 1851 in Kankakee, Illinois, the daughter of Silas T. and Jemima (Scott) Waters. Her sister Rosita (b. 1849) married Caryl's brother John Otis Holden.
