Mattie Lou Zeiner, 97, passed away March 6, 2007 at the Cherokee Villa Nursing Home and Rehab Center. She is survived by her only child, Sally Ann Birge of Pasadena, California. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Block Zeiner, her mother, Annie McCormack, and brother, Joseph McCormack, both from LeMars and her sister, Sarah Ellen Beck, of Grand Rapids Michigan.

Mattie was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1909. She attended a private girl’s school in Ashville, North Carolina as a young woman studying the arts. She was married to Harris Finley Goodman for 22 years and lived in Knoxville, Tennessee during those years.

She came to Cherokee to work for her uncle, Eddie Burke, who owned and operated the Union Hotel. It was there that she met and married Milton Block Zeiner. They had thirty-five years of marriage filled with happiness, laughs and joy of each other.

Mattie was an extraordinary lady who touched the hearts of all that met her. Her circle of friends expanded almost a century with little four year olds to her compatriots. She always found good in every person. Mattie will be remembered for the love of her cat/companion, 25 pound Garfield, her Southern charm, sparkling blue eyes, love of children, her fudge and brownies and the dolls and teddy bears she dressed and donated to charities for many, many years. She will live forever in the hearts of her daughter, Sally, and her close friends.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Greenwood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.greenwoodfuneral.com. Her family requests that remembrances be given to your favorite charity.
