Lillian Garvin, 89, of Marcus died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, with the Rev. Eugene Murray officiating. Burial will be in Holy Name Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, a rosary at 3 p.m., the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a Scripture wake service at 7 p.m., at Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus.

Lillian was born July 20, 1917, in rural Cherokee, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Gertrude (Henke) Kohn, and was the eldest of five children. She attended school at St. Mary's in Cherokee and graduated in 1932. She worked doing housework for people.

While attending dances at Hillside Dance Hall, she met Merlin Garvin. They married on Aug. 16, 1947, and moved to a farm northeast of Marcus, Iowa, where they raised their family. They retired to Marcus in 1974, where Lillian continued to garden and sew her clothes. Her husband, Merlin passed away Oct. 22, 2002. After Merlin's death, Lillian continued to live at her home until December 2005, when she entered assisted living at Heartland Care Center in Marcus.

Lillian always had a large garden and canned much of the produce. She was a good seamstress and enjoyed needlework such as embroidery, knitting and quilting. She enjoyed playing cards, walking and going to the local library. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and participated in St. Ann's guild, Missionary Society and Catholic Daughters of America.

Survivors include four sons, Larry Garvin of Marcus, Ron Garvin and his wife, Jackie of Tucson, Ariz., Dennis Garvin and his wife, Jean of Hales Corner, Wis., and Terry Garvin of Iowa City, Iowa; two daughters, Marilyn Goody of Riverside, Iowa, and Jane Edwards and her husband, Steve of Marshalltown, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merlin; a sister, Agnes Corzilius, three brothers, Marvin, Lorne and Donald Kohn; and a son-in-law, Richard Goody.
