Walter Rhoads

Walter "Bud" Rhoads, 89, of Cherokee passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, at Careage Hills in Cherokee.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Jim Steen officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at the church. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 7:30 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Bud was born April 21, 1917, near Quimby, Iowa, to Charles and Myrtle (Pelton) Rhoads. He graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School.

He was married to Mae Leonard on May 6, 1939, in Cherokee. The family started the family greenhouse business in 1927. He worked with his father until his death in 1970, then the couple continued to operate Rhoadside Greenhouse until their retirement in June 2003. He had been a resident of Cherokee his entire life. He entered Careage Hills in May 2006 due to declining health.

He was a former member of Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Mae; a son, James Carl Rhoads of Des Moines; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Rhoads of Cherokee; a granddaughter and her husband, Dr. Nicole and Vincent Gunter of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters and a brother, Margaret Rhoads of Cherokee, Dorothy Gano of Cherokee and Stanley Rhoads of Sioux Falls, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Dale Rhoads on Aug. 5, 2001.
