Leo E. Trapp, 85, of Cherokee, Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007 at his home following a short illness. It was his request to be cremated. There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be held at a later date. The family requests that memorials be made to Cherokee Hospice. The Boothby Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

He was born Sept. 24, 1921 in Cherokee County to David and Ruby (Hanson) Trapp. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith in 1922. He graduated from Quimby High School in 1940 where he was active in sports and boxed for Golden Gloves and was the Cherokee County Golden Glove Champion.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Navy from July of 1940 until October of 1947. In 1943 he attended Naval Flight School in Austin Texas. He served on the USS Lexington in the South Pacific.

He was married to Elaine J. Gerjets on May 15, 1953 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They resided in southern California where he worked for Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach. The couple moved back to Iowa in 1967, residing on a farm south of Aurelia until moving to Cherokee in 1992

He enjoyed watching sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Dale, Loren and Merle Trapp, a brother-in-law John Schneider and two nephews.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine and two sons: Bruce of Cherokee, and Blake & Cindy of Aurelia; four grandchildren, Dawn Trapp of Salt Lake City, Utah, James of Cherokee, Matt Schwanz and his wife Rose of Cherokee, and Erik Schwanz and his wife Amanda of Cherokee; two great grandsons Tyler and Brandon of Cherokee, one great granddaughter Gracie of Cherokee; one brother and two sisters, Dean Trapp and his wife Beverly of Roseville, Calif.; Elsie Schneider of Appleton, Wisc.; Darlene Roberts and her husband Dean of Layton, Utah; 4 sisters-in-law, Emma Trapp of Washta; Jane Trapp Orange, Calif.; Marjorie Gross of Riverside, Calif.; Janice Trapp of Sioux City; several nieces and nephews.
