M.E. Elaine Peterson

M.E. Elaine "Babe" Peterson, 90, of Cherokee passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee, with the Rev. Ray Hampton officiating. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Elaine was born Oct. 13, 1916, in Cherokee, to Howard and Luella Anne (Reddington) Krout.

She was married to Leonard C. Peterson on Nov. 27, 1934, in Sioux City. She had worked in the kitchen at the Cherokee Mental health Institute for a number of years. She and her husband owned and operated Peterson and Sons Plumbing and Heating for many years.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee.

She is survived by four daughters, Ruth Hoke of Goleta, Calif., Mary Frances and her husband, Paul Loy of Denver, Iowa, Kay and her husband, Robert Heidemann of Collins, Iowa, and Susie Monaghan of Queen Creek, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Linda Peterson of Cherokee; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren; and three sisters, Shirley Rasmussen of Galva, Iowa, Charlotte Leonard and Marcella Cline, both of Cherokee.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard in 1973; two sons, Donald in 2004 and Daniel in 2005; a grandson, Matthew Monaghan; a great-grandson, Austin Brafford; and three sisters, Bertha Redman, Azalea Boatman and Beulah Powell.
