Sylven Fred Schuknecht, 84, of Marcus, died on Monday, December 25, 2006, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2006 at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus, with the Rev. James Gruber, officiating. Burial was at the Prairie View Cemetery in Paullina, with a Flag Presentation by the: Russell West Post of the American Legion of Paullina

The Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Paullina, is in charge of arrangements.

The son of Louis and Anna (Hattermann) Schuknecht was born Feb. 21, 1922 in Union Township of O'Brien County. He received his education in country schools in O'Brien County. He and Gladys Witt were united in marriage on Dec. 17, 1944 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Germantown. After their marriage, Sylven was called into the United States Army and being stationed in Ft. Lewis, Washington. After his discharge the couple returned to O'Brien County, where they farmed southwest of Paullina until 1961. At this time the couple moved to Cleghorn; where he was employed at the Farmers Co-op Elevator first in Cleghorn and later in Marcus, where he was the manager of the grain department. He retired from the Elevator in Marcus and worked part-time for the city of Cleghorn, working outside in city maintenance. After his retirement the couple continued to make their home in Cleghorn.

Sylven was baptized on March 5, 1922 and later confirmed on May 3, 1936 at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown and he was currently a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and woodworking.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Gladys of Cleghorn; three daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Robert Saffrin of Minneapolis, Minn.; Donna and Denny Specht of Marcus; Janet and Richard Peck of Cherokee; 6 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, also other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachel; his parents and a sister, Irena Ebert Holtgrewe.
