Roy C. Specht

Roy C. Specht, 93, of Cleghorn passed away Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Marcus, Iowa, with the Rev. Don Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery, Galva, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Roy Carl Specht was born Oct. 13, 1913, in the family farm in Sheridan Township, rural Cleghorn, to John C. and Amelia (Mayer) Specht. He was baptized in his home on Nov. 8, 1913. He attended Sheridan Township Country School 8, located two miles from his home. Following graduation, he received seven months of religious instruction in the Lutheran faith and was confirmed on April 1, 1928, at Trinity Lutheran Church. A horse and buggy was his transportation to church and school.

He entered the U.S. Army in April 1941. He served overseas during World War II with the 194th Field Artillery. He saw combat in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany including the battle of Anzio. He received his honorable discharge in October 1945.

He returned to the Marcus area and married Beatrice Thompson on July 10, 1957. The couple farmed in Sheridan and Amherst Townships for many years. Along with grain farming, he enjoyed raising Hereford cattle. Bea passed away July 20, 1987. He remained on the farm until moving to the Heartland Care Center in Marcus on Oct. 10, 2000.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a quiet man who enjoyed reading and trips to the stockyards.

He will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Catherine Wendt of Marcus; two sisters-in-law, Elvera Specht of Marcus and Evelyn Helkenn of Cherokee, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Floyd Cartright of Storm Lake, Iowa; a special nephews and his wife, Steve and Rosie Specht of Cleghorn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bea; two sisters, Irene Specht and Myra Johnson; and two brothers, Robert and Harris Specht.
