Merlin R. West, 67, of Meriden, Iowa, died Monday, November 6, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, following a lengthy illness.

Services will be held Friday November 10, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Gregg Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the Elk Township Cemetery rural Alta, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday from 1:00 to 9:00 P.M., with the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.greenwoodfuneral.com.

Merlin was born March 22, 1939 in Ida County to Ray and Pearl (Thompson) West. He received his education in Arthur, Iowa and Alta, Iowa. On June 12, 1960 he married Leah Heschke at the Elk Baptist Church in rural Alta, Iowa. Merlin served in the 3-14 Artillery Battery C in Cherokee, Iowa. He worked at Wilson Foods, Inc. in Cherokee, retiring due to a disability. Merlin was a member of the Iowa Trappers Association as well as C.B. clubs and Breakers of Iowa.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Yvonne West, and her husband, Ken Dodd, of Cherokee, Iowa; Sharon Nicholson, of Cherokee, Iowa; sons, Keith West, and his wife, Pam, of Alta, Iowa; Ted West, of Sherwood, Arkansas; Kelly West, and his wife, Michon, of Hawkinsville, Georgia; grandchildren, Zachary Dodd, Nathan Dodd, Stephanie Nicholson, Nicole Nicholson, Erica Nicholson; step-grandchildren, Zachary Pearl, Rylee Pearl, Devin O’Tool; great-grandchildren, Braden Nicholson and Brooklyn Ebel; sisters, Ramona Merrifield, and her husband, Dick, of Lyttle creek, California; Ruth Ann Johnson, and her husband, Darrell, of Humboldt, Iowa; Maren Hill, and her husband, Jerry, of Marcus, Iowa; brothers, Dale West, and his wife, Diane, of Larrabee, Iowa; Dean West, and his wife, Brenda, of Peterson, Iowa; Dennis West, of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
