Donald D. Peterson, 81, of Aurelia, and former Cherokee and Storm Lake resident, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006 in the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Funeral services will be held, Nov. 10, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee. Pastor Gary Swick will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee.

There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the Church on Friday. Visitation is from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. today at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. There will be military rites at the graveside by L. A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W.

Peterson was born April 25, 1925 in Cherokee, to Richard Alfred Peterson and Hazel (Swanson) Peterson. He attended country school and graduated from Aurelia High School in the Class of 1942. He joined the U. S. Navy, stationed aboard the USS Destroyer and was stationed in the South Pacific for two years.

Peterson was married to L. Charlene Hahn, daughter of Abraham Lincoln Hahn and Leora (Stewart) on Nov. 30, 1945 at the Mount Olive Baptist Church. The couple had three daughters, Marcia Kay, Kathy Jo and Shari Lynn. The Petersons had lived in Aurelia the past years, prior to this Storm Lake for 10 years, and also in Cherokee for many years.

Peterson farmed for the first eight years, then went to work for Iowa Finance Co. in Cherokee and Peterson Motors finance Dept. He bought and managed a finance company in Missouri Valley for two years and another in LeMars for two years. He then was Vice-President for Central Trust & Saving Bank in Cherokee for 12 years, retiring Aug. 1, 1977 due to poor health. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Cherokee for over 40 years and a member of L. A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. He loved being a father and grandpa. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed playing euchre with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew Mike Grohe.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene; three daughters and their husbands: Marcia and Mark Casey Cherokee; Kathy and Steve Magnussen of Murfeesboro, Tenn.; Shari and Marty Eldredge of Cherokee; 4 grandchildren: Brad Herwig, Matthew Herwig, Laci Crabtree and husband Tim; Lindsay Eldredge; one great grandson Michael Herwig; two sisters and one brother: Nona Grohe and her husband Gordon of Aurelia; Bonnie Pope and her husband Leonard of Nevada, Mo.; Jon Peterson and his wife Rhonda of Cherokee; several nieces and nephews.
