Floyd L. "Swede" Smith of Storm Lake Iowa passed away Mon. Dec. 29. 1997 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. funeral services were held Fri. Jan. 2 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Cherokee, Ia.,Rev. Gary Armstrong officiating with buriel at Afton Township Cemetery, rural Cherokee.

Floyd was born July 3, 1943 in Cherokee to George A. and Letha (Small) Smith. He graduated from Washington High School in Cherokee in 1963 and attended college at Springfield S.D.. On July 9, 1966 he married Carlen Gruenhagen in Cherokee. He had worked for Lundell Construction and Christenson Bros. Construction in Cherokee, and had farmed the family farm in Afton Township for many years. He had lived in Storm Lake since 1966. He had been a stock car owner, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. following his sons' sporting events, and enjoyed time with his family and friends.

Survivers are his wife, Carlen; 3 sons Thomas Paul of Ames, Mark Lee and Matthew Jon of Storm Lake; his mother, Letha Smith of Cherokee; 3 brothers; Edward and his wife Patty, Cherokee and John and his wife Lynette, Aurelia; 4 sisters Bonnie and her husband Gary Lewis of Aurelia; Ruby and Her husband Larry Johnson, Cherokee; Doris and her husband Russell Grashoff, Aurelia; Roberta and her husband, Darrell Underwood, Cherokee; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death be his father George on Feb. 17, 1988; and his mother-in-law, Bertha Gruenhagen in 1987.
