Joseph Ray Smith, 77, of Cherokee passed away Sat. Oct. 9, 1993 at 9:45 p.m. in the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake following a lenghty illness. Funeral services were held Wed. Oct. 13th from the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee. Rev. Gary Armstrong Officiating. Burial was in Afton Township Cemetery, rural Cherokee. The Boothby Funeral Home was in Charge of arrangements.

He was born Apr. 14, 1916 in Cherokee to William and Bertha ( Rhea ) Smith. He graduated from Wilson High School in Cherokee in 1934. He was married to Marie Anderson on Mar. 10, 1940 at Spencer Ia. His home was on a farm in Afton Township. He had lived in Cherokee County all his life. He had farmed and raised cattle for many years. He also worked for Bushlows in Cherokee for many years.
He was a member of the St. Paul Methodist Church in Cherokee. He drove a school bus for the Cherokee School System for 27 years. He had a love for flying and owned a Aeronca Champion for over 40 years. He was a member of The Cherokee Flying Club. was an avid bowler, enjoyed the outdoors, especially the sport of snow skiing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers George and Robert.

He is survived by his wife, Marie, three sons and three daughters; Joseph G. Smith, Cherokee; William R. Smith and his wife Ann of Aurelia, Lowell Smith and his wife Paula of Aurelia, Phyllis Rekemeyer and her husband Ross of Albia, Wanda Moller and her husband Darrel of Arnolds Park; Hallie Dessel and her husband Kevin, Cherokee; 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren
