Marie J. Smith, 80, of Cherokee,Ia. died Tues. Sept. 26, 2000, in Sioux Valley Memorial Hosp. in Cherokee.
Funeral Serviced were held Fri. Sept. 29 .at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Rev Gary Armstrong afficiated. Burial was in Afton Township Cemetery, rural Cherokee.
Marie was born June 23, 1920 in Afton Township to Guy W. and Hallie O'Bannon Anderson. She recieved her teaching certificate fron Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls Ia. She married Joseph Ray Smith on Mar. 10, 1940 at Spencer, Iowa. She had lived all her life in Afton Township. She taught school in Spring Township, worked for the Holden Monument Co.in Cherokee, worked for the Farm and Home Store, was a homemaker and manager of the family farm in Afton Township.She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church, Had been an active 4-H leader for many years, a member of the Afton Community Club, The Quilt Batts and the Cherokee County Extension Council. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, and family activities.
She is survived by six children and their spouses; Phyllis and Ross Rekemeyer of Albia Ia. Wanda and Darrel Moller of Arnolds Park, Ia; Joseph and Judy Smith of Tucson Ariz.; William R. and Ann Smith of Aurelia Ia; Lowell and Paula Smith of Aurelia, Ia ; Hallie and Kevin Dessel of Cherokee Ia.; 19 grand-children, 10 great-grand-children; 2 sisters; Marion Fisher and her husband Jack of Lancaster, Calif. and Avis Berry and her husband Jack of Cambridge Minn.
She was preceded in death be her parents; her step-mother Opal (Jenson) Anderson. her husband on Oct. 9 1993, and 2 brothers John and Willard Anderson.
