Marion A. Abels of Spitit Lake, Ia. passed away Dec. 8, 1998. Funeral services were held , Fri. Dec. 11, 1998 at the United Metodist Church in Spirit Lake with Rev. James Stiles officiating. Turner Funeral Home of Spirit Lake was in charge of arrangements.
Marion Adelaide Abels was born on Apr. 23, 1906 in Paullina Ia, the youngest of 10 children of Henry and Emma (Dean) Culp. Upon graduating from high school in Paullina , she taught country school for a short time.
Marion was united in marriage to Bernardt Abels on Dec. 26, 1925. The couple made their home in Sutherland Ia. where they farmed ,, until moving to a farm near Cherokee Ia. in 1932. They retired in 1964, moving to their home in Spirit Lake in 1982.
Abels loved music. At 14 she played for her first funeral. It was at this time she started playing piano for silent movies. She continued with her music with her local church music and choirs, as well as playing at the Lakes Area senior Center, and area nursing homes.
Abels was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church in Cherokee, before transferring to United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, as well as an active member of the Lakes Area Senior Center in Spirit Lake.
She is survived by her son, Gordon Abels, of Storm Lake; 12 granchildren. 10 Great Grandchildren
She was preceded in death by her husband , Ben ; son Gale ;Daughter Janis; and Grandson , Ben.
