John "Jack " Berry, age 82, Of Cambridge, MN died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006 at his home In Cambridge. John Was born Feb.25, 1923 in Fort Dodge, IA to John and Ruth Berry. He was raised in Cherokee, IA. John enlisted in the Army Feb. 1943 and served with the 517th Airborne PRCT as a paratrooper in WW 2. He was honorably discharged in Dec. 1945 with a Purple Heart. He was a member of the Cambridge American Legion Post 290 and a 30 year member of the Isle VFW Post 2816.
John married Avis Ada Anderson on Oct. 30, 1947 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee, IA. They made their home in Newell, IA, first moving to Wahkon, MN in 1959 to own and operate a resort on Lake Mille Lacs and then moving to Cambridge in 1977.
John spent most of his life working for John Morrell. John enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking, playing cribbage, and spending time with his family.
John is survived by his wife of 58 years Avis; children John Berry of Wahkan; Kathy and her husband Bruce Hultgren of Bloomington MN ;Lori O'neal and special friend Rick Redalin; Sally Moore of Dallas, TX ; Jim Berry and wife Theresa of Cambridge, and Corinne Schunk Of Isanti; brother Charles of Cherokee, IA and sister Marilyn and her husband Bob Demers of Storm Lake , IA . He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services were held Monday Feb. 20, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church Officiated by Father Janes D. Hahn. The cantor was Jim Hunter and organist was Mary Kuhn .Pallbearers were grandchildren Nathan and Kelly Hultgren, Brian and Brent Berry, Christopher
Moore and Jacob Berry. Military Honors were provided by Cambridge American Legion Post 290. Internment will be in Afton Township Cemetery in Cherokee County IA. at a later date.
