MARCUS, Iowa -- Richard V. Garvin, 75, of Marcus passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

Services celebrating his life will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, with the Rev. Eugene Murray officiating. Burial will be in Holy Name Cemetery, with military rites conducted by F.I. Goodburn Post 517 of Marcus. Visitation will begin 2 p.m. today, with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 3 p.m., and a Scripture service at 7 p.m., at Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus.

Richard Vincent Garvin was born Oct. 13, 1929, at Marcus, the son of Vincent L. and Luella (Grauer) Garvin. He grew up in the Marcus area, graduating from Holy Name High School. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1951 until 1953.

On Sept. 26, 1953, he married Velma Schwartz in Hartington, Neb. He worked in the Marcus area farming, as a milkman, truck driver and as an aide at Cherokee Mental Health Institute. He and his wife, Velma, owned and operated the Marcus Greenhouse for 43 years.

He will always be remembered for his fun-loving personality and playing with the young-at-heart. He looked forward to their many trips to Lake Okoboji, summer and winter, fishing, playing cards and fun in the sun and snow. He loved being "Dickels," the clown making balloon animals for anyone that was near. He taught us how to do things with our hands, help other and have faith in God.

He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, American Legion and was a clown for Sioux City Sillies.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years, Velma, of Marcus; two sons, Chuck Garvin and his wife, Carol of Le Mars, Iowa and Dean Garvin and his wife, Sheila of Sioux City; three daughters, Katie Blount and her husband, Richard of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Diane Smith and her husband, Mark of Laguna Niguel, Calif. and Karen Wauhob and her husband, Kevin of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren, Brett, Justin and Corey Garvin, Jill and Amy Garvin, Coleman, Dylan and Stephanie Smith and Aeriel and Tanner Wauhob; three sisters, Phyllis Henke and her husband, Cletus of Cherokee, Iowa, Ruth VanderHaag and her husband, John of Sanborn, Iowa and Mary Brady and Bernell Ebert of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a brother, George Garvin and his wife, Kelly of Meriden, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Cathy Garvin of Mankato, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Lee Garvin; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Schwartz.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice.
