WASHTA, Iowa -- Harriet L. Cowan, 91, of Washta passed away Monday, March 14, 2005, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Washta United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Carolyn Hollar officiating. Burial will be in Sunset View Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Harriet was born Nov. 13, 1913, in Holstein, Iowa, to Emil and Hilda (Sorensen) Friedrichsen. She graduated from Galva (Iowa) High School in 1931.

She was married to Harold R. Cowan on Nov. 25, 1936, in Ida Grove, Iowa. She was a caring wife and mother. She owned and operated the Washta Cafe for several years. She was a domestic homemaker for the Albert and Wally Johnson families for many years. She had been a resident of Washta since 1966 and prior to this had lived on a farm west of Quimby, Iowa.

She was a member of Washta United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Senior Citizens, Widows Club and a former 4-H leader. She enjoyed playing cards.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Verlyn "Fritz" and Wanda Friedrichsen of Alton, Iowa, Malcolm "Mick" and Sharon Cowan of Washta, Bryan "Butch" and Monica Cowan of Quimby, Iowa, and Joelle and Lance Cooper of Denison, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Kim (Anne) Friedrichsen, Jed (Pat) Friedrichsen, Lon Friedrichsen, Brent (Kelly) Friedrichsen, Chad (Stacy) Cowan, Dan (Julie) Cowan, Gejia (Vinny) Capasso, Asta (Nick) Ludwig, Lana Wilson, Blake and Melanie Cooper, Amy Cowan and Wade (Mary) Cowan; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold on Dec. 22, 1956; and a brother, Harlan Friedrichsen.
