MERIDEN, Iowa -- Melvin E. Schmidt, 90, of rural Meriden passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at his residence in Liberty Township.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa, with the Rev. Richard Arndt officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery, rural Meriden. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the church. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa.

Melvin was born May 5, 1914, in Meriden, to Frederick and Emma (Ehlers) Schmidt. He was born and died on the family farm in Liberty Township. He attended Liberty Country School.

He married Alice Puhrmann on June 7, 1939, in Cleghorn, Iowa. He had farmed all his life, retiring in 1977.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He had served as a Liberty Township trustee and on the Liberty Township Election board. He enjoyed playing cards and playing Bingo for more than 30 years. He loved gardening, flowers, fishing and his time spent with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; a son and his wife, Dean and Donnia Schmidt of Meriden; a daughter, Phyllis Ames of Marcus, Iowa, and her fiance, Robert Bowen of Ida Grove, Iowa; five grandchildren, Jeff and Kim Ames of Marcus, Iowa, Todd and Kristi Ames of Marcus, Danae and Bruce Dreckman of Marcus, Deb and Dave Merten of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Darcy and Brad Wurth of Le Mars, Iowa; and six great-grandchildren, Kylee and Shana Ames, Emily Dreckman, Austin and Dylan Wurth and Logan Merten.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Emma Schmidt; a son-in-law, Doyle Ames; a sister, Dora Goosen; and an infant brother, Carl.
