Kenneth 'Shorty' Ray

WASHTA, Iowa -- Kenneth L. "Shorty" Ray, 69, of Washta passed away Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with the Rev. Bob Stout officiating. Burial will be in Sunset View Cemetery at Washta. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. There will be a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Kenneth was born October 20, 1936, at Pine, Mo., to William Schmid and Mary Ellen Ray. He had been a sawmill worker in Missouri.

He was married to Clarsie Holloway on April 3, 1957, at Cherokee. He worked for Simonsen's for a few years and then Cherokee County and Flewelling Sand & Gravel for a short time. He then returned to work for Simonsen's in Quimby for many years, retiring on March 12, 2001. He had been a resident of Washta for 41 years. Prior to this, he had lived in the Quimby area.

Shorty enjoyed the guitar, reading, watching NASCAR races, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include a very special companion, Wanda Hollingshead of Washta; three sons, Kenneth Ray Jr. and his wife, Jackie, of Washta, Kevin Ray of Washta and his special friend, Connie Duke, of Quimby, and Kirk Ray and his wife, Sherri, of Washta; his mother, Mary Ellen Schmid of Fremont, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Casandra Simmons and her husband, Matt, Christi Allender and her husband, Josh, Jessica Kaufman, Cody and Dillon Ray, Nathan, Garret and Emily Ray; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ann Thompson and Pat Brawley and her husband, Marvin, all of Wilderness, Mo., and Betty Schmid of Freemont, Mo.; a brother, Raymond Schmid and his wife, Denise, of Doniphan, Mo.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; and his wife, Clarsie on April 28, 2003.
