Alvin H. Ducommun

CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Alvin H. Ducommun, 93, of Cherokee died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with Pastor Dennis Hopes officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery at Larrabee, Iowa. A family prayer service will be 10:15 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m.

Alvin was born March 17, 1912 at Cleghorn, Iowa, the son of Emile and Mary (Springer) Ducommun. He attended Cleghorn Consolidated School.

He was united in marriage to Sophie M. Steimke on Jan. 30, 1938, at Larrabee. They lived on farms in Cherokee County before moving to the Larrabee farm in 1941. He farmed there until his retirement in 1978 when he and Sophie moved to Cherokee where they resided at 1603 Susan Ave.

He was a member of Larrabee United Methodist Church and held various positions on the Church Board. He served on the Larrabee School Board and the Larrabee Co-op Elevator Board.

Alvin enjoyed his horses while he worked on the farm. He enjoyed attending high school basketball games most of his life. He took up bowling when he retired from the farm and took many bus tours with his wife Sophie. He loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Sophie; a son and a daughter, Jim Ducommun and his wife, Judy, of Larrabee and Vicky Gries and her husband, Gerry, of New Hope, Minn.; six grandchildren, Kurt Gries of Jackson, Wyo., Kevin Gries and his wife, Stacy, of Alpine, Wyo., Jeff Ducommun and his wife, Linda, of Larrabee, Jason Ducommun and his wife, Carey, of Larrabee, Jared Ducommun and his wife, Kim, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kari Nelson and her husband, Dan, of Maple Grove, Minn.; seven great-grandchildren, Tina Guedes of New River, Ariz., Jaden and Drew Ducommun of Larrabee, Danyel Jo and Drew Nelson of Maple Grove and Samantha and Jeremy Alvin Gries of Alpine; a brother and two sisters, Clair Ducommun of Storm Lake, Iowa, Nolie Stieneke and her husband, Ronald, of Sioux City and Elva Hergtoop of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews. Alvin has been a role model to his grandchildren and his legacy will always be with us.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Delmar, Roy, Ralph and Frank Ducommun; and a sister, Marie O'Donnell.
