Al Horton

CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Al Horton, 75, of Cherokee passed away Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, at Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with the Rev. Gary Swick officiating. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in Patterson Cemetery, Nixa, Mo. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. There will be military rites conducted at the funeral home by the Veterans of Foreign Wars L.A. Wescott Post 2253.

Al was born June 25, 1930, in Springfield, Mo., to Allen and Sylvia (Hoffman) Horton. He graduated from Rogersville High School in Missouri, in 1950. He went to barber school in Sioux City. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. He was discharged in 1953.

He was married to Cecilia Risner in 1957. He had worked as a barber and a locksmith for many years, retiring in 2003. He had lived in Cherokee since 1960, prior to this in Sioux City and Rogersville, Mo.

He was affiliated with the Baptist Church and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars L.A. Wescott Post 2253. He enjoyed traveling, dancing and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by six children, Robert Horton and his wife, Gail of Gladstone, Ore., Cindy Horton of Flint, Texas, Laura Paeper and her husband, Mike of Milford, Iowa, Mark Horton and his wife, Denise of Cherokee, Monte Horton of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and Marla Eaton of McMinnville, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three brothers, Dale Horton and his wife, Gena of Springfield, Mo., George Horton and his wife, Sandra of Rogersville, Mo., and Robert Horton of Rogersville, Mo.; and a sister, Delacey Rutherford and her husband, Dewayne of Galena, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Zachary Wendt; and a brother, William Horton.
