CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Carl Melburn Carlson, 82, of Cherokee, formerly of rural Paullina and Cleghorn, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at the Careage Hills Care Center in Cherokee.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Oakdale Evangelical Free Church in rural Meriden, Iowa, with the Revs. Merle Wester and Larry Ostercamp officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Melburn was born Aug. 25, 1922, in Cleghorn, Iowa, to Carl A. and Mildred (Wester) Carlson. He attended country school. He served in the U.S. Army with Co. K, 135th Infantry, 35th Division during World War II.

He was married to Bessie Karstens on Aug. 12, 1946, in Paullina, Iowa. He had farmed near Cleghorn until 1968, then near Paullina until retiring in 1997. The couple then moved to Cherokee.

He was a member of Oakdale Evangelical Free Church.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie; three daughters and their husbands, Karen and William Eby of Panora, Iowa, Betty and James Egger of Cherokee and Ruth and Randy Reusch of Quimby, Iowa; seven grandchildren and spouses, Janell Eby of Ames, Iowa, Denise and Twan Quan of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Jamie and Dana Sump of Grimes, Iowa, Lori and Dave Anderson of Allen, Texas, Stacey and Darren Zwiefel of Cherokee, Kelly and Trish Reusch of Washta, Iowa, and Chad Reusch of Quimby, Iowa; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Delbert Carlson of Peoria, Ariz.; and a sister, Doris Rigby of Bowling Green, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family requests that memorials be made to Hidden Acres Christian Center in Dayton, Iowa.
