David James Yaggy

CHEROKEE, Iowa -- David James Yaggy, 59, of Lewisville, Texas, former native of Cherokee, died Thursday, June 23, 2005, at Presbyterian Hospital in Plano, Texas.

Memorial services will be Monday at The Presbyterian Church of Hackberry Creek, Irving, Texas, with the Rev. Brian Grassley officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee at a later date. David was born Dec. 2, 1945, in Cherokee, to long-time Cherokee residents, Jay and Faye Yaggy, now both deceased. David earned his bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, following his graduation from Washington High School in Cherokee (class of '64), and remained a Texas resident until his death. He also attended North Texas State University to further his continuing education.

Dave was a long-time physics and science teacher in public and private high schools and middle schools, primarily in the Dallas area. His career as an educator was highlighted by his 13-year tenure at MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas, from 1988-2001. David worked concurrently in various sports statistician positions during his weekends and other free time, including a 25-year partnership with Verne Lundquist's broadcast team, first in the Dallas area, and then with CBS Sports nationally. He also volunteered his services in a variety of officiating and statistician duties for various high school and other sports teams.

Survivors include his sister, Janne Deischl of Houston, Texas; a brother, Clark Yaggy and his wife, Marilyn of Marietta, Ga.; nieces and nephews, Anne Bishop and her husband, Dan of Montclair, Va., Patrick Yaggy and his wife, Carissa of Sugar Hill, Ga., Scott Deischl and his wife, Kim of Beaumont, Texas and Molly Prim and her husband, John of Houston; great-nephews, Jason Deischl of Beaumont, Texas, Joshua Prim and Paul Prim, both of Houston; and a great-niece, Daniella Bishop of Montclair, Va. Dave is also survived by his good friend and AFS high school exchange student from Brazil, Sergio Bermudes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Dennis Deischl.

Memorials are requested for the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer's Association.
