CHEROKEE, Iowa -- F. Gary Herron, 65, of Cherokee passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at his residence following a one year courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Gregg Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery, rural Meriden, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at the church. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Gary was born June 7, 1939, in Cherokee, to Francis and Blanche (Sachau) Herron. He graduated from Washington High School in 1958.

He was married to Lois Lochner on May 29, 1960, in Meriden, Iowa. He lived in Cherokee the past 12 years, prior to this on a farm in Pilot Township. He had farmed for 38 years and had worked for R.J. Thomas Manufacturing for 12 years, retiring Feb. 25, 2004.

He was a member of the Crossroads Christian Church. His greatest joy came from helping others. You could always depend on his help for any project. He loved working on machinery, did woodworking, electrical work, plumbing and drywall. There was never anything he could not fix.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; two sons and their wives, Brian and Natalie Herron of Cherokee and Robert and Kandi Herron of Quimby, Iowa; three grandchildren, Hayley and Hannah Herron and Casey Herron; his mother, Blanche Herron of Cherokee; a sister and her husband, Thais and John B.
