CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Walter J. Saner, 87, of Cherokee died Monday, Sept. 12, 2005, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. Condolences may be sent online to www.greenwoodfuneral.com .

Walter was born Nov. 26, 1917, in Cherokee, to Frank and Katie Saner. Following his schooling, he joined to U.S. Army during World War II and worked as an cook in the European Theater. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Cherokee and worked as a farmhand for many years.

Survivors include his nephews, Terry Rupp and his wife, Larae, of Cherokee and Ken Saner of Elgin, Ill.; and a niece and her husband, JoAnn and Nis Laursen of Meriden, Iowa.
