CALUMET, Iowa -- Clarence R. Bengtson, 86, of Calumet passed away suddenly Saturday, May 21, 2005, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa, due to a heart condition.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Jim Steen officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery, Larrabee, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa.

Clarence was born June 15, 1918, on a farm in Cherokee County, Iowa, to Robert and Jennie (Peterson) Bengtson. He attended country school and Aurelia (Iowa) school.

He was married to Joyce Lockwood on March 18, 1941, in South Sioux City. In his early years, he was a machine operator in Chicago. He owned and operated the Chocolate Shop in Cherokee for short time, then farmed for many years in Cherokee County. He retired and moved to Calumet in 1984.

He was a lifetime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Cherokee County Farm Bureau. He loved farming, fishing, playing the harmonica, playing cards and especially his time spent with his immediate family, his many grandchildren and other relatives.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; four children, Janice A. Woodall of Cherokee, Joanne F. Burgeson of Cherokee, Judy K. and her husband, Larry Timmins of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Jerry Bengtson and his fiance, Carolyn Smith of Larrabee, Iowa; nine grandchildren and their spouses and 14 great-grandchildren, Kim Woodall Seliger and Dan Seliger and their children, Sofia and Nathaniel, Jerry and Kathy Woodall and their children, Matthew, Maddison and Tanner, Julie and Larry Smith and their son, Jay, Scott and Robin Jahn and their children, Megan, Matthew and Shayla, Debra and Brent Nelson and their children, Jordan, Brendan and Dylan, Shelley and Steve Baker and their children, Shelby and Jennifer, and Adam, Chad and Wade Timmins; a sister-in-law, Lois Bengtson of Des Moines; and a brother-in-law and his wife, LeRoy and Joyce Lockwood of Spirit Lake, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter, Jillian Smith; three brothers, Louis, Donald and Clifford Bengtson; and his father and mother-in-law, Matt and Icyel Lockwood.
