CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Verna E. McLaughlin, 81, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Cherokee, died Friday, July 21, 2006, at her home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Clearwater.

She was born in Cherokee County, Iowa. She moved to Cherokee in 1934, where she lived until moving to Florida in January 1987.

Besides being a homemaker, she worked part time at McLaughlin and Sons Electric. Her other favorites were her love of chocolate and bridge. After retiring to Florida, bridge was her No. 1 hobby.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee until she became a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Clearwater.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Bill; her four children, Marcia Phipps of Tennessee, Bob and Linda McLaughlin of Florida, Don and Trudy McLaughlin of Iowa, and Sylvia and Bruce Strand of Colorado; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Rose Mueller of Nebraska; and many friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Ella Mueller; a daughter, Linda Marie McLaughlin; a great-grandson, Michael Wayne McLaughlin; her sister and husband, Pauline and Levi Sutton; and a brother, Ralph Mueller.
