CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Warren E. Fassler, 83, of Cherokee passed away Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, per Warren's wishes to be cremated with a graveside service. Military rites will be conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars, L.A. Wescott Post 2253. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Warren was born Dec. 21, 1922, at Cherokee, the son of Earnest and Alice (Hunter) Fassler. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Quimby High School in 1940. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 in the Philippines and the Solomon Islands.

He was married to Bernice E. Wray in September of 1943. They raised four children, Roger, Julie, Karen and Ken. Warren farmed in the Quimby and Meriden area before buying the hardware and furniture store in Quimby in the mid 1950s. He also sold insurance for Mutual of New York before starting at Wilson Foods in 1965, where he worked until he retired in 1984.

He was affiliated with Quimby United Methodist Church. You could usually find Warren doing the things he enjoyed in life, riding his moped around town, playing cards, golfing and fishing.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen Cheatham of Las Cruces, N.M.; a son, Kenneth Fassler and his wife, Vicki of Meriden, Iowa; a son-in-law, Chuck James of Chino, Calif.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Roberta Wilcox of Broomfield, Colo. and Jerry Larson and her husband, Herb of Cherokee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernice, in 1968; a son, Roger, in 1974; a daughter, Julie, in 2006; a son-in-law, Jerry Cheatham; a brother, Robert Fassler and his wife, Marjorie; and a brother-in-law, Doug Wilcox.
