MARCUS, Iowa -- Merle D. Prunty, 97, of rural Marcus passed away Thursday, March 9, 2006, at Floyd Valley Hospital In Le Mars, Iowa, following a brief illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Church of Christ in Cherokee, Iowa, with Pastor Gary Swick officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery, rural Meriden, Iowa. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. A family prayer service will be 10:15 a.m. Monday at the church.
Merle was born July 27, 1908, in O'Brien County, Iowa, the son of John and Mabel (Hoke) Prunty. He graduated from Cleghorn (Iowa) High School in 1927.
He married Evelyn Olson on Feb. 11, 1935, at Meriden.
He farmed all his life, retiring in 1973. His home was on a farm south of Marcus where he had lived most of his life. He entered Heartland Care Center on Sept. 1, 2005.
He was a member of First Church of Christ in Cherokee. He enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter, Duane Prunty and his wife, Jeanne, of Poulsbo, Wash., Roger Prunty and his wife, Jeanette, of Marcus and Pauline Don and her husband, Larry; a nephew who they raised as a son, Darrell Johnson of Kearney, Neb.; seven grandchildren, Troy and Mike Don, David, Robert and Brian Prunty, Laurie Adams and Kevin Johnson; four great-grandchildren, Christopher and Brandon Don and Maya and Aiden Adams; and a sister-in-law, Helene Prunty of Cherokee.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Aug. 26, 1999; his parents; four brothers, Lester and Ray Prunty and two brothers in infancy; and three sisters, Ardyth Wassenaar, Edith Olson and Hazel Walker.
