CHEROKEE, IOWA -- Leonard L. Sand, 82, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2006, at his home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with the Rev. Ray Hampton officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Leonard was born Nov. 20, 1923, at Danbury, Iowa, to George and Emily Gertrude (Slater) Sand.
He was married to Phyllis Short on Dec. 8, 1941. She passed away. He was married to Evelyn (Machac) Conley on May 8, 1971, at Elk Point, S.D. Leonard had lived in the Cherokee area most of his life. He had worked for the Hartley Creamery picking up eggs. He went to work for Wilson Foods Corp. in 1965, retiring in 1986. He also drove truck for Fredrickson Grain Co. in Meriden, Iowa, for a few years.
He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Leonard enjoyed going for coffee, playing cards, pitching horseshoes and golfing in his younger years.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; two sons, Leo Duane Sand of Lake Worth, Fla. and Kevin Sand of Costa Mesa, Calif.; five stepchildren, Jim Conley and his wife, Lynette of Marcus, Iowa, Danny Conley and his wife, Kay of Victoria, Texas, Debra Paulsen and her husband, Lyle of Washta, Iowa, Barbara Conley of Phoenix, Ariz. and Randy Conley and his wife, Sandra of Victoria, Texas; a sister, Ellen Prochaska of Palmer, Neb.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Georgia and Richard Vasut of El Campo, Texas, Lydia and Russel Nash of Yorktown, Texas, Jerry and Billy Machac of Roundrock, Texas, Edward Machac of Cat Springs, Texas, Jodie and Rachel Machac of Georgetown, Texas, Jeanette Rychlik of Sealy, Texas and Julie and Leroy Kolinek of Taylor, Texas; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Garry Sand and Dennis Sand; four brothers and five sisters.
