ALTA, Iowa -- LaBetha L. "Betty" Erickson, 80, of Cherokee, Iowa, formerly of Alta, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center in Cherokee following a valiant fight with cancer.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta, with the Rev. Ted Eilders officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Aurelia, Iowa. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Barker Funeral Home in Alta.
Betty L. Erickson was born Sept. 7, 1925, on a farm in Cherokee County, Iowa, to Charles and Lillian (Wunschel) Galvin. She attended rural schools and graduated from Aurelia High School in 1943.
She was united in marriage to Marlyn Erickson on Feb. 14, 1945, in Alta. They farmed until 1956, before moving into Alta. She worked as a cook for 10 years at Alta Hospital before retiring after being diagnosed with M.S. They lived in Alta until 1999, when they moved to Cherokee.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed cooking, baking, embroidering tea towels and visiting with family and friends. She will be fondly remembered by her granddaughters and her great-grandchildren for her chocolate chip cookies.
She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Donna and Dave Bofenkamp of Cherokee; two granddaughters, Jodi and her husband, Matt Mongan of Cherokee and Julie Bofenkamp of San Antonio, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Kylie, Carson and Kenna Mongan; four brothers, Junior Galvin and his wife, Tena Mae of Aurelia, Bob Galvin and his wife, Ardiss of Alta, Garold Galvin and his wife, Ila Mae of Alta and Leland Galvin of Aurelia; seven sisters, Alice and her husband, Delbert Peterson of Storm Lake, Iowa, Delores Brisbois of Richland Center, Wis., Bonnie Raper of Cherokee, Jean and her husband, Loren Neville of Moville, Iowa, Pat and her husband, Stan Peterson of Aurelia, Carol and her husband, Bernie Peterson of Aurelia and Sandy and her husband, John Zimmerman of Sac City, Iowa; two brothers-in-law, Norman Erickson of Greeley, Colo., and John Erickson and his wife, Marty of Berthoud, Colo.; three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Galvin of Alta, Jeanie Galvin of Aurelia and Sharon Galvin of
Cherokee; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marlyn; an infant daughter, Sharon; three brothers, Don, Paul and Larry; and four brothers-in-law, Orlan Sauter, Jim Brisbois, Earl Erickson and Paul Raper.
