Betty Jean Hanson

CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Betty Jean Hanson, 86, of Cherokee passed away Monday, July 24, 2006, at Country Side Estates in Cherokee.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, with Adrian McMullen officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Betty was born Oct. 26, 1919, in Cherokee, the daughter of Dee and Bernice (Wheatley) Ferrin. She attended school in Cherokee and graduated from Wilson High School in 1939.

She married Oke Hanson on May 11, 1941, in Cherokee. After Oke returned from the war, they lived on a farm near Aurelia, Iowa. In 1955, they purchased the Ferrin family farm south of Cherokee and farmed until Oke's retirement in 1980.

In retirement, Betty enjoyed needlework and traveling to purchase collectables. Betty was interested in fashion and worked many years at Hope's Fashion Farm and the Clothes Peddler, both in Cherokee.

Betty was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church and a longtime member of the D.A.R. and the P.E.O.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Hanson of Cherokee and Michael Hanson and his wife, Jean, of Bay Village, Ohio; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother and a sister, Robert Ferrin and his wife, Jan, of Wilmington, N.C., and Joan Jensen of San Angelo, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oke on Dec. 30, 1991, and her parents.

The family requests memorials to Memorial Presbyterian Church.
