James L. Miller

CHEROKEE, Iowa -- James L. Miller, 71, of Cherokee passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at his residence.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Jim Steen officiating. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars L.A. Wescott Post 2253. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Jim was born Aug. 9, 1934, in Melbourne, Iowa, to Alfred and Rigmor (Larsen) Miller. He graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School in 1952, then attended Iowa State University for one year.

He was married to Christine Rasmussen on April 25, 1954, in Cherokee. He served one enlistment in the U.S. Army Reserve, being discharged in December 1962. He had worked as a foreman for Christensen Bros. Inc. for 41 years. In 1995, he and his sons created 4M Custom Homes.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Speculative Lodge 307 A.F. & A.M., Abu Bekr Shrine in Sioux City and the Cherokee Shrine Club. He enjoyed woodworking and decorating his acreage at Christmas time.

He is survived by his wife, Chris; three sons, Mark Miller and his wife, Tammy of Cherokee, Matthew Miller and his wife, Marilyn of Cherokee and Craig Miller of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; a great-stepgranddaughter; two sisters-in-law, Mary and her husband, Theodore Liebsch of Grand Marais, Minn., and Dorothy Wilkie of Cherokee; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Chris and Bobbi Rasmussen of Tampa, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Art and Ruth Rasmussen; a sister and her husband, Elaine and Glenn Hompland; and two brothers-in-law, John Wilkie and John Wachal.
