Bernard F. Kohn, 67, of Cherokee, Iowa, died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 A.M. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Armand Bertrand will officiate. A private burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:30 A.M. until the service at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Bernard was born February 1, 1939, to Bernard (Ben) Kohn and Faye McCannon in Cherokee, Iowa. He attended Immaculate Conception High School and graduated in 1957. On August 25, 1962, he married Paula Rupp in Cherokee, Iowa.
Bernie worked for Hobe Johnson as an electrician and was also a dispatcher for the Cherokee Police for several years. He was on the city council for two terms. In 1982, Bernie was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and in 1999 became a resident of Careage Hills Nursing Home. Bernie also was a ham radio operator and enjoyed bird watching.
Survivors include his 3 daughters, Kathy Handwork, and her husband, Craig, of Aurelia, Iowa; Aimee Stratton, and her husband, Russ, of Jefferson, Iowa; Elizabeth Grant, and her husband, Tom, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; six grandchildren, Ryan and Kiel Grant, Steven and T.J. Handwork, Reilly and Reid Stratton; sister, Mary Griego of Littleton, Colorado; former wife, Paula Pisch, and her husband, Emil, of Cherokee, Iowa; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Kenneth, a brother Wilbur Kohn, and a brother-in-law Frank Griego.
