Odelia M. “Della” George, 84, of Cherokee, Iowa died Friday March 24, 2006 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center, Cherokee, Iowa following a brief illness
Services will be held Monday at 10:30 A.M. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Armand Bertrand will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be Sunday from 11:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., at Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee. A rosary by the Catholic Daughters of America will be held at 4:00 P.M. Sunday, followed by a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Della was born January 12, 1922 on a farm near Granville, Iowa, to John and Marie (Bussmas) Thorman. She attended school in rural Baker Township in O’Brien County.
On September 10, 1940 she married Art Kohn in Granville, Iowa. They farmed in the Maryhill area for several years. He preceded her in death January 21, 1950.
She moved to Cherokee in 1950 to live with Kathryn and Elizabeth Kohn. She was employed at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute from 1961 to 1980. On February 23, 1954 she married Aloysius George in Cherokee, Iowa. He preceded her in death December 3, 1978. Della was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, and Ladies Guild. Della enjoyed her children and grandchildren, playing cards, collecting recipe books, doing volunteer work.
Survivors include daughters, Joyce Woltman, of Cherokee, Iowa; Eleanor Gehlsen, and her husband, Lesly, of Carroll, Iowa; Paula Dodds, and her husband, Richard, of South Sioux City, Nebraska; sons, Karl George, of Sioux City, Iowa; Jan George, and his wife, Doris, of Sioux City, Iowa; Mark George, and his wife, Kimberly, of Cherokee, Iowa; Kent George, and his wife, Denise, of Waterloo, Iowa; Also, 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Cecelia Schuckman, of Lincoln, Nebraska; a son-in-law, Gerald Frost, of Gettysburg, South Dakota; a sister in law, Jean Scott Thorman, of Platte City, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands (Art Kohn and Al George), daughters (Carol Frost and Mary Josephine Kohn, in infancy) brothers (Max and John Thorman) sisters (Julia Thorman Feller and Dorothy Thorman Johnson), a son-in-law (Richard Woltman, 1976), and a grandson (Marty Frost).
