SULLIVAN, HOOD, TAWNEY, BARCUS, MCGAFFIN

Ernest D. Sullivan, 89, of 1134 Hill Street, Cherokee, Iowa died Monday April 10, 2006, in Country Side Estates, following a lengthy illness.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa. Gregg Johnson will officiate. Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be sent at www.greenwoodfuneral.com .

Ernie was born October 16, 1916 on a farm near Macedonia, Illinois to Ben and Ruby (Hood) Sullivan. He moved to Cherokee in 1932 and graduated from Wilson High school in 1938. On September 10, 1937 he married Marjorie Tawney in Sioux City, Iowa. He worked for the A & P Store until 1942 when he moved to Sioux City, Iowa.

After living in Sioux City for a short time he moved to Portland, Oregon where he worked as a lead welder on Baby Flattops for Willamette Iron and Steel Co. In February of 1945 he joined the U.S. Army. Ernie served in the Calvary at Fort Riley, Kansas and then in Germany until his discharge in July of 1946.

For 20 years Ernie worked as a salesman for Chase Chevrolet Co., in Stockton, California until his retirement in 1966. In 1972 he moved to the mountains above Stockton, California where he lived until returning to Cherokee, Iowa in 1978. Ernie enjoyed dancing, jogging, and golf

Survivors include his wife; sons, Gary Sullivan, and his wife, Pamela, of Yachats, Oregon; Greig Sullivan, and his wife, Donna, of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandsons, Sean Sullivan, and his wife, Rhonda, of Camdenton, Missouri; Michael Sullivan, and his wife, Melissa, of Shawnee, Kansas; great-grandchildren Derek, Issa, and Lillie Sullivan; sister, Betty Barcus, and her husband, Bob, of Spokane, Washington; 2 nieces and a sister-in-law, Billie Sullivan, of Medical Lake, Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister (Margaret McGaffin) a brother (Durwood Sullivan).
